📖 Why Does the UK Use Stones for Body Weight?

The United Kingdom is unique among developed nations in still using stones (1 stone = 14 pounds) as the primary unit for measuring body weight. When a British person says they weigh “12 stone 7,” they mean 12 stones and 7 pounds — the rest of the world would say 79.4 kg.

This persists because:

Interestingly, the UK officially adopted the metric system in 1965, but stone measurements for body weight remain the stubborn exception — a charming quirk of British life.

🕑 A Brief History of Imperial vs Metric

The stone has ancient origins. Historically, a stone could be anywhere from 5 to 32 pounds depending on the commodity (wool, meat, or grain). In 1835, the British Weights and Measures Act standardised the stone at 14 pounds avoirdupois — the value we use today.

The metric system was developed in France during the 1790s and is now used by virtually every country in the world. The UK began metrication in 1965, but progress has been partial and voluntary, leading to a dual system where:

This mix of imperial and metric is known as a “hybrid” system — and the stone is arguably its most enduring imperial survivor.

🧠 How to Convert Stones to KG in Your Head

You don’t always have a converter handy. Here are two mental shortcuts:

Quick method (approximate):

stones × 6.35 ≈ kg

Since 1 stone = 6.35029 kg, multiplying by 6.35 gives you a result within 0.01 kg of the true value. For everyday conversation that’s plenty close enough.

Easier mental trick:

stones × 14 = pounds
pounds ÷ 2.205 ≈ kg

First convert stones to total pounds (st × 14 + lb), then divide by 2.205 to get kilograms. To go backwards (kg to stone):

kg × 2.205 = total pounds
total pounds ÷ 14 = stones (remainder is pounds)

Example: 12 stone 7 lb = 175 lb ÷ 2.205 ≈ 79.4 kg.

📈 BMI Calculator in Stones and Pounds

BMI (Body Mass Index) is calculated the same way regardless of units. If you know your weight in stones and your height, here’s how to compute BMI:

BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)²

Since 1 stone = 6.35029 kg, convert your weight first, then apply the formula.

Try it below:

20.5kg/m²
Weight: 76.2 kg Height: 1.78 m Category: Normal

BMI categories: Below 18.5 = Underweight • 18.5–24.9 = Normal • 25–29.9 = Overweight • 30+ = Obese
